Natural gas control – precise natural gas analysis with calibration gases for reliable quality assurance

Natural gas is a key fossil fuel that plays a significant role in energy supply systems. The quantitative evaluation of the energy content is primarily based on the Wobbe index and the calorific value, which serve as the basis for supply and network regulation. Continuous natural gas control and monitoring along the supply chain are crucial to ensure compliance with specifications and a reliable supply to end consumers.

Technical principles of natural gas analysis and quality assurance

The exact composition of natural gas is determined using process gas chromatographs (PGC). These analysis systems measure the proportions of individual hydrocarbons and other components in natural gas in order to calculate the Wobbe index and other quality-related parameters. Regular calibration of the process gas chromatographs with precise calibration gases for natural gas control is essential to ensure high measurement accuracy and reproducibility.

High-precision calibration gases for natural gas control from Messer

Messer offers a comprehensive portfolio of high-purity single gases, standard PGC gas mixtures, and customer-specific hydrocarbon mixtures as calibration gases for natural gas control. Our calibration gases meet the requirements for precision and stability to ensure reliable and standard-compliant natural gas analysis.

All standard calibration gases are supplied with a certificate of analysis documenting the exact composition in accordance with EN ISO 6974 (determination of the composition of natural gas by gas chromatography). Based on this composition, the Wobbe index is calculated in accordance with EN ISO 6976 and stated in the certificate. Calibration gases with accreditation in accordance with EN ISO/IEC 17025 are also available for the highest quality requirements.

Advantages of Messer calibration gases for natural gas testing

  • Precise, traceable hydrocarbon mixtures (C1 to C6+) in defined concentrations
  • Compliance with the relevant standards EN ISO 6974 and EN ISO 6976
  • Customization of gas mixtures for individual application requirements
  • Delivery with certified analysis and optional accredited certificate
  • Support in complying with legal and technical requirements
